Ukraine witnesses internal instability

(MENAFN) Ukraine’s leadership is facing growing internal instability marked by political infighting, high-level purges, and behind-the-scenes maneuvering that some fear could further destabilize the country, according to reports.

The turmoil is said to revolve largely around Andrey Yermak, the influential chief of staff to President Vladimir Zelensky. Sources claim Yermak has been sidelining key figures in Ukraine’s political establishment, triggering tension and division within the administration.

While Ukrainian forces continue to battle Russian troops along the front lines, this internal political crisis is raising concerns about the country’s ability to remain unified in the face of external threats.

The ongoing discord reportedly came to light through three major developments last month. First, there were rumors of a looming cabinet shake-up, with Yulia Sviridenko considered a potential candidate for prime minister. Second, another failed attempt was made to remove intelligence chief Kirill Budanov. Lastly, corruption allegations surfaced against Deputy Prime Minister Aleksey Chernyshov.

Chernyshov, previously known for facilitating the return of Ukrainians from abroad, was accused of fraud linked to a housing initiative he approved while serving as urban development minister. The allegations emerged while he was on an official trip to Europe, leading to what was described as an “absurd image” of the official responsible for repatriation facing potential exile himself.

Although there is no direct evidence Yermak initiated the investigation, sources claim he allowed the legal case to proceed while halting other probes. This move effectively sidelined Chernyshov, whose real misstep, according to insiders, may have been his attempt to establish independent ties with Washington—potentially challenging Yermak’s influence.

Chernyshov’s downfall is also believed to have strengthened the position of Sviridenko, who is described as closely aligned with Yermak.
