USS Gerald R. Ford Sails to Crete for Repairs
The ship will undergo pierside repairs at a US Navy facility on the island after a blaze erupted last week in its laundry area, taking several hours to bring under control.
During its deployment in the Middle East, the massive warship—the largest in the world—has faced a series of technical issues, including a prior malfunction of its toilet system.
Having been stationed in the region for nearly nine months, the USS Gerald R. Ford was deployed as part of US operations connected to tensions with Iran. Following the fire on 2 March, more than 200 crew members were evaluated for smoke inhalation and subsequently returned to duty.
One sailor required medical evacuation and is reported to be in stable condition, while two others received treatment for minor injuries.
The incident prompted an extensive damage control effort, with crew members laboring for hours to contain the fire and ensure it did not spread to other sections of the ship. Smoke caused damage to living quarters, rendering over 100 beds unusable. Replacement cots were arranged, and additional mattresses and clothing were sent to the vessel after the laundry facilities were destroyed.
A US Fifth Fleet spokesperson confirmed that the ship remains operational, while the cause of the fire is under investigation.
Officials stated that the carrier will sail to Naval Support Activity Souda Bay in Crete for more than a week of repairs, as reported by general naval sources.
Earlier in January, the ship experienced a toilet system failure, leading to clogged facilities and long lines for restrooms, according to reports.
