Netanyahu Says Iran Truce May Falter "In a Very Short Time"

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stark warning Monday that the fragile ceasefire with Iran was on the verge of unraveling, delivering the assessment one day after high-stakes talks between Washington and Tehran ended without a breakthrough.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting, Netanyahu signaled Tel Aviv's backing for a US naval blockade on Iranian ports set to take effect at 1400GMT Monday, according to media.

The prime minister disclosed the contents of a recent conversation with senior American leadership, saying: "I spoke yesterday with Vice President J.D. Vance. He made it clear that the main issue is the removal of all enriched material and ensuring that there is no more enrichment," adding that this point is important for Israel as well.

Netanyahu outlined what he described as the terms of the existing arrangement with Tehran, claiming that under the deal with Tehran, the US and Israel would halt their strikes and "the Iranians would immediately open the gates." He then leveled a pointed accusation at Iran: "They did not do that," he alleged.

The warning comes in the wake of rare direct negotiations held in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Saturday between Washington and Tehran — two parties that agreed to a two-week ceasefire just last week following a conflict that erupted on February 28. The talks, however, ended early Sunday without any agreement, leaving the truce's future in serious doubt.
