Medvedev: U.S. Will Not Come to Europe’s Aid in Conflict with Russia

(MENAFN) Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev bluntly warned Tuesday that the European Union should harbor no illusions about American military backing in any future confrontation with Russia, arguing that Washington has neither the interest nor the intention to defend the continent.

Medvedev, who also serves as deputy head of the Russian Security Council, leveled the remarks on Russian social media platform Max, lashing out at what he described as "insane" European leaders for stoking tensions — citing accelerated drone production in support of Ukraine and joint nuclear exercises between France and Poland as evidence of deliberate escalation.

He insisted that the United States would not ride to Europe's rescue in such a scenario, contending that Washington remains consumed by its own internal preoccupations.

"Washington simply doesn't need Europe — and doesn't feel sorry for it at all," Medvedev said, dismissing the continent as "not yet strong enough" to mount a credible challenge against Russia.

His broadside extended to the EU's fundamental value as a security partner, declaring that "as an ally, Europe is a zero" — a verdict he underpinned by pointing to the bloc's persistent economic difficulties and mounting migration pressures across its 27 member states.

Rather than relying on transatlantic guarantees, Medvedev urged European governments to conduct a sober audit of their own defensive capabilities, specifically targeting the resilience of military production facilities, energy infrastructure, and transportation networks.

"Therefore, before you shout about your readiness to decisively rebuff the Kremlin and inflict a crushing defeat on Russia, simply assess your own strength without taking into account the capabilities of the United States," he said.
