Trump Says Iran Desperate to Open Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump accused Iran of publicly demanding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz purely to avoid embarrassment, insisting Tuesday night that Tehran is privately desperate to reopen the critical waterway as its economy buckles under the weight of an American blockade.

Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump dismissed Iran's closure rhetoric as political posturing, arguing the regime cannot afford to keep the strait shut.

"Iran doesn't want the Strait of Hormuz closed, they want it open so they can make $500 Million Dollars a day (which is, therefore, what they are losing if it is closed!). They only say they want it closed because I have it totally blockaded (closed!), so they merely want to 'save face'," Trump said.

The president went further, claiming that Iranian intermediaries had privately approached him seeking an immediate reopening — but warned that any premature concession would derail prospects for a broader diplomatic agreement.

"People approached me four days ago, saying, 'Sir, Iran wants to open up the Strait, immediately.' But if we do that, there can never be a Deal with Iran, unless we blow up the rest of their Country, their leaders included!" he wrote.

The remarks came hours after Trump announced an extension of the US-Iran ceasefire, granting Tehran additional time to formulate a "unified proposal" — a move prompted by a request from Pakistani officials. Islamabad had brokered the original two-week ceasefire on April 8 and hosted direct US-Iran negotiations on April 11–12. That ceasefire had been scheduled to expire Wednesday evening Washington time. A further round of talks is being pursued, though significant uncertainty surrounds the process.

In a separate Truth Social post, Trump painted a stark portrait of Iran's deteriorating financial position, suggesting the regime is nearing a breaking point.

"Iran is collapsing financially! They want the Strait of Hormuz opened immediately- Starving for cash!" he wrote.

Trump also alleged that internal unrest is growing within Iran's security forces over unpaid wages, adding: "Military and Police complaining that they are not getting paid. SOS!!!"
