Iran Denounces U.S. Vessel Seizure as 'Piracy'
In a formal letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the presidency of the UN Security Council, Iran's mission laid out its charges in unambiguous terms: "On 19 April 2026, in the vicinity of the coasts of Iran in the Sea of Oman, U.S. military forces carried out a hostile and unlawful attack against the Iranian commercial vessel 'Toska.'"
The letter pulled no punches in its legal characterization of the incident, asserting that "this attack against a civilian vessel constitutes a grave and manifest violation of the fundamental principles of international law" and accusing Washington of engaging in "acts of coercion, intimidation, and the reckless endangerment of the vessel's crew and their families."
Tehran escalated its condemnation further, stating: "The deliberate intimidation and psychological terror inflicted upon the crew and their families further compound the egregious nature of this act," and warning that "such conduct bears the hallmarks of piracy in nature and amounts to a dangerous escalation that severely endangers the safety and security of vital shipping lanes."
Beyond the maritime and humanitarian dimensions, Iran framed the episode as a fundamental breach of the fragile diplomatic framework currently holding hostilities at bay, describing it as "a clear and material breach of the ceasefire of 8 April 2026." Tehran also invoked UN Resolution 3314 — the landmark international definition classifying attacks on another state's naval vessels as acts of aggression — to underpin its legal case against Washington.
Iran issued a series of firm demands, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the vessel, its crew, and their families, while urging the Security Council and the secretary-general to "take an immediate, firm, and principled position" — demanding both an outright condemnation of the incident and full accountability for those responsible.
The letter closed with a grave caution, warning that the episode "poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security" and represented "a dangerous escalation" that, Tehran argued, further "exacerbates the already volatile situation" at a moment when diplomatic efforts to avert broader conflict remain deeply fragile.
