Belgian FM Condemns Destruction of Religious Statue in Lebanon
In a written statement, Maxime Prevot reacted to footage showing an Israeli soldier using a hammer to destroy the statue in the town of Debel. He said the incident was “disgraceful and reprehensible,” emphasizing that such actions are inconsistent with respect for religious beliefs.
The video has drawn widespread condemnation from both local communities and international observers, sparking reactions from political and religious figures.
Prevot stressed a broader principle, stating that “the principle that guides us is simple: everyone’s beliefs must be respected, regardless of religion.” He also expressed concern over what he described as increasing pressure on both Christian and Muslim communities, as well as a rise in antisemitism.
Israeli officials have also responded to the incident. The country’s foreign minister issued an apology, calling the act “grave and disgraceful,” and confirmed that an investigation had been launched to determine responsibility.
